Rating: 2 out of 5 stars - DULL, BORING,POORLY WRITTEN.
I would have thought it nigh on impossible for a biography of a bon vivant and roue like Alan Clark to be boring but Ion Trewin has achieved it admirably.
This book is so disjointed and condescending to be annoying. The material at Trewin's disposal must have been immense. But his prose is so patronising and uncritical that I thought I must be reading about someone else. So disappointing. Let's hope that a decent writer picks up the challenge.

Rating: 1 out of 5 stars - A real let-down
I have to agree with many of the previous reviews, who feel this book is a real let-down and a case study of how to make a potentially interesting subject matter into a very dull read. Paradoxically the wretchedness of the prose style, the over long passages on certain periods of his life and the lack of incisive non-critical analysis of other parts of his life actually count against your view of Clark as a person.

As the official biography of him (written with the apparent co-operation ... Read More

Rating: 2 out of 5 stars - A boring book about a less than boring character
I agree with Phillip Winter-Taylor. A very disappointing book. I had read the Diaries twice and felt that I had got to know Alan Clarke and was looking forward to reading this. However reading Mr Trewin's prose was akin to reading the telephone directory and he removed all the sparkle from this larger than life character.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - "Many Prejudices and Little Energy."
Devotees of Alan Clark's Diaries will be delighted by this warm, well-written and richly detailed life by Ion Trewin and hardly deterred by the author's obviously indulgent attitude towards his subject.

Alan Clark was born into a life of privilege. The son of the wealthy and both socially and intellectually eminent art historian (Lord) Kenneth Clark, he strove constantly to earn his father's approval which, in keeping with his time, class and Englishness, was only sparingly forthcoming. Alan ... Read More

Rating: 3 out of 5 stars - What would Alan have thought of this?

As yet another fan of AC who has waited years for the official biography, I too am enormously disappointed by this 'official' biography. The author's prose style is Ford Prefect compared to his subject's Lagonda. Where is the flair and the scandal which AC would surely have expected to see in his biograpy? AC was never dull and its outrageous that this book is just that. AC's life had so many contradictions, especially in his private life, and the book fails to explore anything in any depth. ...
