Editorial Review:

Amazon.co.uk Review:
Bestselling author Daniel Goleman's theories on emotional intelligence have radically altered common understanding of what "being smart" entails, and in Primal Leadership, he and his coauthors present the case for cultivating emotionally intelligent leaders. Business leaders who maintain that emotions are best kept out of the work environment do so at their organisation's peril. Since the actions of the leader apparently account for up to 70 per cent of employees' perception of the climate of their organisation, Goleman and his team emphasise the importance of developing what they term "resonant leadership". Focusing on the four domains of emotional intelligence--self-awareness, self-management, social awareness and relationship management--they explore what contributes to and detracts from resonant leadership, and how the development of these four EI competencies spawns different leadership styles. The best leaders maintain a style repertoire, switching easily between "visionary", "coaching", "affiliative" and "democratic" and making rare use of less effective "pace-setting" and "commanding" styles. The authors' discussion of these methods is informed by research on the workplace climates engendered by the leadership styles of more than 3,870 executives. Indeed, the experiences of leaders in a wide range of work environments lend real-life examples to much of the advice Goleman et al. offer, from developing the motivation to change and creating an improvement plan based on learning rather than performance outcomes, to experimenting with new behaviours and nurturing supportive relationships that encourage change and growth. The book's final section takes the personal process of developing resonant leadership and applies it to the entire organisational culture.--S Ketchum

Average Rating: out of 5 stars

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Must read for those taking up even the most junior management position
This is a well referenced and academically sound text. Goleman is a world leader in the subject and I recommend this book to anyone who has ever experienced frustration when dealing with uncooperative colleagues. The first half is heavily focused on you - the manager/leader, which gets a little annoying after a while - why do I have to do all the emotional legwork? (You can see wht my CEO recommended this author to me!) However, the latter part of the book looks at the emotional intelligence of the ... Read More

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - M. L. King Jr. knew most of this intuitively
This book takes to the surface the underlying forces of emotions that guide every single of us in our personal and in our working lives. Understanding and tapping into such forces in the workplace is the single way most powerful way that leaders have to get the best out of themselves and out of people that they work with.

Great leaders' success lies not in presenting logical cases why we should do this or that but in moving people emotionally. I don't remember Martin Luther King, Jr. using ... Read More

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - Primal Leadership: Learning to Lead with Emotional Intelligence
This is a book which gives insights into the good and bad, positive and negative styles of leadership/how to get the best out of your employees and your own working relationships. The style of writing is easy to read and professional.

Throughout the reading of it I have picked up many points for improvement for myself and for clients.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Enlightening common sense
This audio CD (all 7 of them!) were a real inspiration to me. I will no doubt be listening to them again and again to consolidate and build on the application of Emotional Intelligence. What makes this so captivating is the regular examples of leadership styles within organisations. I have already recommended this audio CD/book to friends and colleagues.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Excellent Summary of the Important Thinking
In many ways this audio CD is better than the book it is based on. Goleman's writing style can be stodgy, but his audio presentation is very good and it is great to hear the author emphasising the lessons that he thinks are important. Buy this if you use EI in business.
